Volume one starts with the first locomotive to reach South Africa, a small 0-4-2 well tank brought out from England in a brig in 1859, and goes on to record the locomotive history of all railways other than the 2ft. narrow gauge in being before Union in 1910. The second volume describes in equal detail and with a wealth of illustrations the locomotives of the South African Railways since 1910.
