Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography volume 2 page 332: The substance of the work originally appeared in the Wesleyan Methodist Magazine, but before republication it was practically rewritten, and chapters added on Bechuanaland and Natal. The author arrived in South Africa in March 1840, and engaged in missionary work in the Eastern Province and Kaffraria, after which he returned to England. He gives an account of the Cape Colony, giving special attention to the Albany district, and several chapters are; devoted to a description of Kaffraria, its tribes and its missions, with considerable information respecting the Kaffir " War of the Axe." There are six steel engravings.
