Mendelssohn 2:390. 'The promoters raised between ?13,000 and ?14,000 for the purposes of the hospital, the Duke of Portland contributing ?5000. The medical staff and orderlies, with full supplies, left England on December 13, 1899 and on their arrival at the Cape no time was lost in commencing operations at Rondebosch. Here they remained three months, after which the hospital was removed to Bloemfontein, its existence coming to an end in July 1900. During its career, 1009 officers and men were treated, a full list of whom will be found in the appendices, which also contain full particulars respecting the equipment, and much other valuable information.'
