Mendelssohn 2:70. 'The sketches are written in a skilful and humorous manner, and give life-like portrayals of the statesmen of South Africa at this period. Among these were Mr. Molteno, afterwards premier of the colony, Mr. Saul Solomon, Mr. (afterwards President) Brand, Fairbairn and others.' They are repeated in Dutch in the second part of the volume.D.S.A.B. 3:647. Murray and family were wrecked off Cape Town in 1854 and decided to remain in Cape Town. He became editor of the Cape Monitor and then in 1856 founded the Argus, selling his share later to Saul Solomon. He started newspapers in Grahamstown and Kimberley and had a life-long interest in mining. Throughout his life Murray enjoyed a reputation for a high level of journalistic ability - in particular the ability to grasp the 'essential features of his subject'.
