This book 'was written in a prisoner-of-war camp in India by a young Transvaler, Dietlof van Warmelo. The manuscript was smuggled from the camp to Holland; it was translated into English and published in London in 1902, before the end of the war.' (Publisher's note in the reprint edition of 1977).
