511 pages, 8vo (215 x 149 mm), 7 hand coloured plates, map, table (Table of reciprocal distances of principal military posts, ports, Etc. on Eastern Frontier), later brown cloth, some light browning and foxing

'A South African Bibliography', volume 2, page 363. See also 'The Quarterly Bulletin of the South African Library', volume 8, 1954, pages 94 - 103, for an analysis of the plates in the various editions by R.F. Kennedy. The present copy is bound from the twelve original parts issued between March 1851 to February 1852 but is without the wrappers and the title and contents pages which was issued with the final part. 6 plates are tinted lithographs without an artist mentioned although the plates at pages 261 and 309 are reminiscent of Thomas Baines and and one (page 473) is a wood-engraving by Baines (del.) - all are hand coloured. Neither the S.A.B. nor Kennedy mention a copy with hand coloured plates. An inscription of the second front free endpaper reads, 'Sarah A. Hayter. Books belonging to my dearest brother & which I had borrowed in 1856. The beginning of the History of the Kaffir War in which he served 11 years.'
