24 coloured plates printed on stiff card and 1 black & white plate loose in a portfolio, 4to(360 x 245 mm), 35 page explanatory booklet, brown cloth portfolio with ties, in the original brown publisher's cardboard box. Frank Connor Publication No.1. Number 227 of an edition limited to 1000 copies

Writing in the Dictionary of South African (Volume 1, page 169) some years after the publication of the portfolio, Anna Smith states: 'From 25.8.1685 to 26.1.1686 Van de Stel led an expedition which penetrated as far as the Copper mountains of Namaqualand. It is generally believed that Claudius accompanied this expedition, many of his drawings bearing dates falling within this period or being preserved with accounts of this journey, but no list of the members of the expedition appears to have survived and no other contemporary evidence has been traced.?
