Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography Volume II page 423: When this volume was published, the author had only been in South Africa for three years but he gives some interesting information respecting the sub-continent, its wars, politics and history, together with some observations on the Zulu War and the first annexation of the Transvaal.' At the time of the Zulu War Dictionary of South African Biography volume 1 page 278 -279Statham was editor of the Natal Witness in Pietermaritzburg in which position he acted very independently - so much so that he clashed with the owner of the paper who feared for his commercial interests. 'Blacks, Boers and British' is a book remarkable for the progressive political concepts expounded in it.
