From the preface to no 1: This publication has two aims. Firstly, it is hoped that it will foster an awareness of current events in Africa amongst those people who would not otherwise come into contact with any even vaguely objective and pertinent literature. An attempt is made to put current events, directions, and policies into their historical, sociological and economic perspectives and thus, hopefully to stimulate interest and debate on this continent and its policies and progress. Secondly we hope to provide more meaningful analyses for those who, while being more aware of the situations in Africa, are not able through lack of time or resources to attempt the rigorous research necessary for a deeper understanding of them.
